Ben Stokes: England captain denies rift with head coach Brendon McCullum and insists disagreements are healthy

Ben Stokes has dismissed any suggestion that he and Brendon McCullum are not aligned, insisting that differences of opinion are integral to healthy and successful sporting relationships.

The relationship between England's captain and head coach has come under forensic scrutiny following a disastrous 4-1 Ashes defeat in Australia, during which their tour preparation and unyielding attacking philosophy were heavily criticised.

At times during the ill‑fated series, there appeared to be a divergence in messaging between coach and captain, but Stokes maintains they remain largely on the same page ahead of England's Test summer.

"When you're in a position of leadership with someone else, if anyone thinks you're always going to agree on everything, then it's just impossible," Stokes said.

"To me, that isn't a healthy environment for sport, where everyone just agrees with everyone or says yes to the person up there. You need debate. You need discussions. Then you end up getting to the place you both want to reach.

"As similar as me and Brendon are, we're also dissimilar in other areas. But the thing we both want is to be as successful as we possibly can.

"How we get to being successful might be the same here but differ slightly there - but we will always end up in the same place by having these discussions.

"We agree 95 per cent of the time, but for the five per cent where we have different views, we talk it through and end up getting to where we want to be.

"Agreeing on every single thing is impossible. Saying we weren't aligned is a massive overstatement."

Stokes and McCullum are now tasked with lifting England off the canvas during this summer's home Test series against New Zealand and Pakistan.

Stokes expressed hope that their partnership will continue beyond the summer and through to the end of 2027, by which point he hopes to have had another shot at Ashes redemption.

"With what me and Brendon have been able to achieve with the group over a four‑year period, I just couldn't imagine doing what we're trying to do with anyone else," Stokes added.

"We're both very proud men in what we do. We put a lot of our heart and soul into this job. Brendon certainly has for the four years he's done it so far, and hopefully we'll still be together at the end of 2027, winning what we want to win.

"I'm very confident in mine and Brendon's ability to work together, because we've done it for such a long time now - but work together in a slightly different way.

"The main point for me and Brendon is our alignment towards winning and making this team as good as it can be. That's always been the case since we started. It might just look a little different now after four years of working together.

"We still want to win everything, and we still want to give the guys the best chance they possibly can of being as good as they can be."
